ASMR Tingles Explained: Why They Happen (and Why Not Everyone Gets Them)

Some people hear a whisper and feel a wave of tingles. Others feel… nothing. Both reactions are normal.

This article explains what ASMR tingles are, what research suggests is happening in the body, and how ASMR differs from frisson (the “music chills” feeling).

What ASMR is

Nebraska Medicine describes ASMR as a tingling, static‑like sensation in response to specific triggers, often paired with calm and sleepiness. (https://www.nebraskamed.com/neurological-care/asmr-videos-are-exploding-online-but-what-is-asmr-and-does-it-work)

WebMD also provides a general overview of ASMR and common triggers like whispering and repetitive movements. (https://www.webmd.com/brain/autonomous-sensory-meridian-response)

What the research suggests

A well-known 2018 study (PLOS ONE) found that in people who experience ASMR, watching ASMR videos was associated with reduced heart rate and changes in skin conductance—suggesting ASMR can be calming and physiologically engaging. A 2022 study examined effects of an ASMR video on mood and attention-related measures, adding to the evidence base. (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9142458/)

Common ASMR triggers

Different triggers can produce different outcomes:

ASMR vs frisson (music chills)

Frisson is typically linked to emotional peaks in music. ASMR tends to come from gentle, predictable cues and personal-attention sensations.

If you only get “chills” from music, you might be experiencing frisson rather than ASMR. That’s still a valid sensory response.

How to increase your chances of tingles

  1. Use headphones (stereo/binaural helps).
  2. Go slower (fast triggers can be overstimulating).
  3. Try unintentional ASMR.
  4. Take breaks if tingles fade (see our tingle‑immunity guide).
